Our team works to integrate learned racial justice tenets into curriculum revision or creation through co-planning sessions embedded in cycles of inquiry.
We offer strategic coaching and feedback as folks practice liberation in their day-to-day work so everyone is empowered on the road to systematic change.
How do I make sure my instruction is anti-racist and liberatory for my students? Little Uprisings will provide direct coaching services to educators to assess and build on their capacity to develop and implement curricula with an anti-racist lens. Little Uprisings coaching services will include observations, debrief sessions, and actionable feedback, aligned to the goals of the areas of focus and the broader equity-driven instructional vision of the school.
Teachers will receive implementation support through ongoing classroom observations and feedback grounded in anti-racism.
Professional Learning Communities
What does anti-racist instruction look like in action? (PLCs) will support teams of educators to dig deeper into their curricular materials to improve their practice through unit study, lesson study, data analysis, and discussions with peers with a focus on anti-racism. PLC supports for unit unpacking focus on the following topics:
-
Looking for Bias
-
Changing the narrative
-
Provocations Everyday
-
4+1 Pursuits everyday
Teachers will be guided to make informed shifts in their planning and implementation practices through collaboration alongside colleagues.
How do I continue to do this work with an anti-racist lens? Cycles of Inquiry will allow teams of educators to explore a specific question over the course of approximately 4-6 weeks. This process is grounded in research and instructional practices with a focus on anti-racism. Through the exploration of a selected topic, teachers will get the opportunity to learn and implement new practices to determine implications for their instruction based on their analysis of student work.
Cycles of Inquiry can focus on the following or alternative topics based on school needs and desired outcomes:
-
Option 1: Anti-racist ELA and Math approaches
-
Option 2: Questioning & Criticality
-
Option 3: Interdisciplinary Instruction with a focus on art
-
Option 4: Joy in Instruction
Teachers will engage in individual and team reflection through unit & performance task analysis, feedback and action planning.
How do I integrate play and liberational workshops into my classroom as another mode of engagement? Children’s workshops are designed to jumpstart or reinforce learning that is already occurring in the classroom or within the school community. Some workshops that have already been developed include: R is for resistance; talking about resistance through art; Tutus for Batman: a gender identity workshop; Among the Stars; talking about Mae Jemison, Changing Neighborhoods, Talking about gentrification; Celebrating May day and worker’s rights; Until we are all free: Black Women and the Suffrage Movement; J is for Juneteenth! And more!
Students will engage in interactive workshops that highlight their intellect, identity and genius. Educators are able to see these interactions modeled for further learning in the classroom.
School + Community Bundle
How do I cultivate a culture of anti-racism across the whole school community? Little Uprisings can provide comprehensive and systematic anti-racist learning services that create the opportunity for synergy between teacher, parent, and kid workshops across a single school community. Through this service, school communities will engage in collective learning that serves as a foundation for anti-racist learning with a focus on educators, guardians, and students.
The School Community will collaborate to establish a common ground for anti-racist practices.
We have done the one-day workshops, now what? Little Uprisings seeks to eliminate the pattern of one day professional development seminars that may incorporate and explicate a wealth of knowledge, but then disappear and do not leave lasting impacts on the school curriculum and the larger educational environment that it operates in. Little Uprisings will not just come to teach, but will serve as a true partner to walk through real change with you. Changing the culture of a space is an undertaking that takes time, commitment, regular assessment and joy!
Customized plans of support will be developed and implemented based on the desired goals and outcomes in support of a community partner.
